How to migrate from GoDaddy to a modern website provider without breaking email

Step-by-step migration from GoDaddy Website Builder to a modern platform, with the specific gotchas around email, DNS, and SEO redirects that trip up 80% of first-time migrators.

1. Why GoDaddy migrations are riskier than other migrations

GoDaddy usually holds all three assets in one place: your domain (registrar), your email (Workspace or their proprietary email), and your website (Website Builder). When you migrate the site off GoDaddy, you have to be careful not to accidentally break email or lose the domain — mistakes here can cost you customers for days. Wix and Squarespace migrations are easier because those platforms only handle the website, not email + domain.

2. Step 1: Inventory what you actually have on GoDaddy

Log into GoDaddy and note: (1) domain registration + expiry date, (2) email provider (GoDaddy Workspace / Microsoft 365 via GoDaddy / other), (3) website builder plan + expiry, (4) any DNS records you or a prior developer added (MX, SPF, DKIM, verification records), (5) any add-on subscriptions (SSL, marketing tools, extra storage). Screenshot everything. This inventory is your safety net.

3. Step 2: Move domain registration LAST, not first

The instinct is 'let me get my domain off GoDaddy first.' Don't. Domain transfers between registrars take 5-10 days and require the domain to be unlocked, which creates a window where things can go wrong. Keep the domain at GoDaddy during the site migration; move it only after the new site is live and stable for 2 weeks.

4. Step 3: Set up your new site fully before touching DNS

Build your new site on your new platform and get it working at a staging URL (usually something like your-site.netlify.app or a subdomain). Test every page, every form, every image. Only when the new site is completely ready do you touch DNS.

5. Step 4: Update DNS records surgically — website first, email untouched

In GoDaddy's DNS panel, change ONLY the A record (or CNAME) that points to the website. Leave MX records (email), SPF records (email deliverability), and DKIM records (email signing) exactly where they are. This is the #1 mistake: people update 'nameservers' at their new provider, which wipes all custom DNS records including MX, and email goes down for hours or days.

6. Step 5: The 24-48 hour propagation window

DNS changes propagate globally over 24-48 hours. During this window, some visitors see the new site, others see the old GoDaddy site. This is normal and unavoidable. Don't panic and don't re-change DNS — you'll only make it worse. Monitor with a tool like dnschecker.org.

7. Step 6: Set up 301 redirects for old URLs

GoDaddy Website Builder uses URL patterns like /page-name.html. Your new site probably uses /page-name. Every old GoDaddy URL that Google has indexed needs a 301 redirect to the new equivalent, or you lose the SEO ranking. Get a list of your old URLs from Google Search Console, map each to the new equivalent, and set up redirects at your new host.

8. Step 7: Cancel GoDaddy in the right order

AFTER your new site is stable for 2 weeks: (1) transfer the domain to a new registrar OR leave it at GoDaddy but downgrade to the cheapest plan (~$12/yr), (2) cancel the Website Builder subscription, (3) either migrate email to Google Workspace / Fastmail / your new provider OR leave GoDaddy email in place, (4) cancel any add-ons you're no longer using. Don't cancel domain registration — you own that permanently and losing it is catastrophic.
